A pesar de que para muchos éste fue un fin de semana feliz gracias a The Cure, hoy debemos rendir un minuto de silencio para Richie Havens. El músico que fuera el primero en pisar el escenario de Woodstock falleció el día de hoy a los 72 años de edad a causa de un infarto.
Havens fue un prolífico músico de folk que, tal vez tuvo un comienzo hippie, sin embargo editó más de una decena de discos que se metían en las listas Billboard al ser lanzados. Sin embargo, lo que en realidad lo convirtió en una leyenda fueron sus presentaciones en vivo que dejaron muchas bocas abiertas; tal vez la que más se reconoce un punto clave en su carrera fue el set que presentó en Woodstock como primer acto. Los organizadores le pidieron a Havens que extendiera su set «un poco más» pues muchos de los artistas que le seguían no había llegado, y ese poco más se convirtió en 3 horas.
No paró de salir de gira por 45 años, y se retiró apenas el año pasado debido a complicaciones de salud. Con respecto a su muerte, su agencia de booking Roots Agency emitió el siguiente comunicado:
RICHIE HAVENS was gifted with one of the most recognizable voices in popular music. His fiery, poignant, soulful singing style has remained unique and ageless since his historic appearance at Woodstock in 1969. For four decades, Havens used his music to convey passionate messages of brotherhood and personal freedom. Billboard Magazine writes, “This acoustic soul giant truly seems to be getting more inspiring and graceful with age.”
«From Woodstock to The Isle of Wight to Glastonbury to the Fillmore Auditorium to Royal Albert Hall to Carnegie Hall, Richie played the most legendary music festivals that ever were, and most of the world’s greatest concert venues. But even when performing in a Greenwich Village coffeehouse or a small club or regional theater, he was eternally grateful that people in any number turned up each time to hear him sing. More than anything, he feels incredibly blessed to have met so many of you along the way.»
